By the age of 15, going on 16, I was training for an elite swim club, 18 hours a week of wear and tear, grinding, non-stop stress on my body. I kept having this back pain appear and at first, I thought nothing of it – I did not want to be weak – so I kept going. That is the athletes’ mindset, right? An injury makes you weak, not being able to handle the training thrown at you. This simple phrase captures the idea that a seemingly minor or routine action can cause an unpredictably large and rapid reaction, due to the cumulative effect of many previous small actions.
